Lake Havasu Wildlife Wonders at Black Meadow Landing

Desert Views, Lake Breezes, and Some Seriously Sassy Burros

If you’re the kind of traveler who loves nature walks, sunrise bird calls, and the occasional four-legged visitor outside your window, then you’re going to love Black Meadow Landing. Tucked into the scenic shores of Lake Havasu, our resort offers more than just boating, RVing, and desert sunshine—it’s also a great place to spot wildlife in the California desert.

Here’s a look at the friendly (and sometimes funny) creatures you might meet when you stay at BML—and why this lakeside escape is perfect for nature lovers, wildlife watchers, and outdoor adventurers.

Birdwatching on the Lake

If you love birdwatching, you’re in luck: the Lake Havasu region is home to over 350 bird species. Black Meadow Landing sits right in the middle of prime birding habitat, offering peaceful shoreline views, trees for perching, and calm coves where birds like to gather.

Keep an eye out for:

  • Vermilion Flycatchers – tiny birds with bright red feathers and big personality

  • Ospreys – watch them dive dramatically into the lake to grab fish

  • Great Egrets & Herons – tall, elegant birds wading along the water’s edge

  • Yellow-rumped Warblers – energetic little songbirds flitting around the mesquite

Whether you’re sitting by your RV, enjoying breakfast on a cabin patio, or walking near the docks, the bird activity at BML offers nature photography gold and peaceful lake vibes.

Small Critters, Big Charm

The desert around BML is alive with charming creatures who keep their distance but add to the magic of your stay. In the early morning or just before sunset, you might spot:

  • Desert cottontail rabbits hopping through the brush

  • Quail families scurrying in single file (yes, it’s adorable)

  • Lizards warming up on the rocks, doing their best lizard push-ups

  • The occasional fox or bobcat track in the sand (but the animals themselves are very shy)

It’s a quiet ecosystem out here—and that’s part of what makes it so special. Come feel connected to desert wildlife right from your RV site or vacation rental.

The Burros of Black Meadow: Unofficial Resort Mascots

Of course, no nature blog about Black Meadow Landing would be complete without mentioning our most famous residents: the wild burros.

These desert donkeys roam freely around the area, including right through the resort. You might see them near the lake, outside your RV, or—if you’re staying at the Burro Inn—you might just wake up to one peeking in your window!

The burros are descendants of animals brought by miners in the 1800s, and while they’re wild animals (please don’t feed them!), they’re also surprisingly social and curious. It’s not unusual for a group of them to saunter through camp like they own the place. Which, let’s be honest, they sort of do.

Stay Where Nature Comes to You

Whether you’re visiting for the wildlife, the boating, or just to unplug and relax, Black Meadow Landing offers a front-row seat to desert nature on Lake Havasu.

Choose from:

  • Full-hookup RV sites near the water

  • Burro Inn rooms (yes, they’re air-conditioned, and yes, the burros occasionally make surprise appearances)

  • Vacation rentals for families or groups looking for a cozy basecamp with all the comforts of home

You’ll wake up to desert views, birdsong, and maybe even a furry burro buddy or two. No crowds, no noise—just fresh air, wildlife, and Lake Havasu nature at its finest.
